The Atlas will give you a rough idea of how much power can be derived from the wind in a particular area, but extensive testing is required before committing to the installation of turbines.

A useful site for general reference.
The trouble with wind...
is that it cannot be relied upon to be there when needed. This may be acceptable when the wind energy is a small part of a grid with larger, traditional sources. If wind is all you have, you need a way to make it reliable.
And photovoltaics...
are similarly unreliable, though with different statistics.
Storage methods
Batteries, pumped hydro, compressed air, hydrogen...
but perhaps there is another solution...
